Revealed, the top 7 excuses men give for not going to the doctors - which are costing many their lives Men often avoid going to the doctor because they say they're 'too busy' or afraid of bad news They're known as the tougher sex and are often mocked as having 'man-flu' at the slightest sign of a sniffle. But it is a well-established fact that men are less inclined to go to the doctors - often risking their health as a result. Rather than make appointments to see their family doctor on a regular basis, especially those aged 16 to 44, are often more likely to make excuses for not going. This reluctance to get checked over for seemingly minor problems can mean the opportunity for early detection and treatment of potentially fatal illnesses can be missed. In a bid to get more men along to see a doctor, a survey looked at the top excuses men most often make. It found the number one reason given was that they were simply 'too busy' with almost a quarter of men using that excuse. Just behind it at 22 per cent was men being afraid of finding out that something could be wrong with them. Many also admitted they were uncomfortable with certain body examinations such as prostate checks and others did not want to answer uncomfortable questions. Meanwhile, others blamed not wanting to be weighed while the most flimsy excuse was the cool temperatures of the examination room. The excuses didn't wash with the two American doctors who launched the 'Drive for Men's Health campaign' who said they had personally heard those excuses - and plenty more. Dr Jamin Brahmbhatt and Dr Sijo Parekattil are driving cross country to challenge men to stop making excuses and start making changes. 'Men can spend 34 hours golfing or watching a ball game every week, or find the time to take a trip to Vegas with their buddies, but they can't spare 90 minutes a year to get a check up? That's inexcusable,' said Dr Brahmbhatt, a men's health activist in Florida. 'As men, we need to make our health more of a priority, and that's what the Drive for Men's Health campaign is all about.' The doctors point out that the life expectancy for men is at least five years less than it is for women, and of the top 10 causes of death in the US, men are more likely that women to die from nine of them. Failure to visit the doctors has been linked to men having a lower life expectancy than women, studies found Previous studies have found men are a third less likely to go to see a doctor or pharmacist than women.pre bonded hair Earlier this year, Diana Sanchez, professor of psychology at Rutgers University, also linked 'macho attitudes to health' with lower life expectancy in men. The found men were also more likely to choose male doctors   because they thought they were more competent than female doctors. TOP EXCUSES GIVEN BY MEN 1. Too busy -24 per cent 2. Afraid of what might be wrong - 22 per cent 3. Uncomfortable body exams - 19 per cent 4. Being weighed - 12 per cent 5. Being naked under gown - 8 per cent 6. Personal questions from doctor - 7 per cent 7. Too cold in exam room 4 per cent 8. Something else - 11 per cent Yet when they go to see a male GP, it was found they were less likely to be honest with them about their problem. A psychological questionnaire discovered many felt they should be 'tough, brave, self reliant and restrained' about potential medical problems,' according to the study. 'That's because they don't want to show weakness or dependence to another man, including a male doctor' Professor Sanchez said. The latest survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of Orlando Health using a poll of 2,042 adults. 'Women are much more proactive about their health than men,' said Dr Brahmbhatt. 'We often use the analogy that our bodies are a lot like our cars. 'Men will take the time to do preventative maintenance on their cars, like getting tune ups and oil changes, but for whatever reason, we often don't take the same care of our bodies. 'We need to change that mindset,' he said.
